Nearly everyone knows that good health is essential in life for many reasons. Even so, adopting healthy habits is often quite challenging, especially if you lead a busy life. This is especially true if you have had unhealthy habits for a good portion of your years. Habits, after all, are hard to break. Yet if they are armed with reliable information and strategies, easily found in abundance with wireless internet, anyone in pursuit of a healthier lifestyle can be successful.





What about children? How does a sick child behave? How do you judge a healthy child? Is there a connection? If you became ill, what would be your first reaction? Obviously you'll want to get better. And how would you get better? Do you go to the medicine cabinet, pharmacy or even the doctor and get medicines, take them and hope the sickness will go.

Throw away all the junk food in your pantry. Yes, this may sound a bit outrageous at first. However, let's face it, the more you see junk food in your house the more likely it is that you consume them. Start today. Clean your pantry or fridge by tossing all chips, canned goods, instant noodles, cookies etc into the trash. Now stock your kitchen with fruits and vegetables. The next time you feel hungry, you can now start training yourself to eat fruits and veggies.

Physical activity will do wonders for your health. At this age I just have to work it into the daily routine naturally. Other more formal exercise, if you can manage it is good too - but be careful. I used to run about three or four miles a day. I got out of the habit for various reasons, and when I retired I tried to get back into it, but the effort was enormous and I was unable to do it any more. I tried Beneficial healthy habits a Boot Camp once a week where they took people with heart issues (so I'd be near the Emergency department just in case!) - but it was soooo much effort and stress, I decided it wasn't for me. I saw it through to the end, and then thought, "why am I doing this?" It's not as if I'll ever become a Calvin Klein underwear model again! Not that I ever was.

Eating right, however, will not only give you the energy to stay on an exercise program, it will also help you lose weight and keep it off permanently. The secret is to commit to a sensible eating plan for the rest of your life and not just to lose a few pounds.

A wonderful, older friend of mine, who has since died, gave the best advice I can think of for Healthy living advice living: Get on with it! She lived an active, productive and fulfilling life. And is still missed by many.

So when I first retired, I took to completing crossword puzzles every day, feeling that maybe I needed some mental stimulation now that I didn't have the mental challenges of my previous occupation. However, crosswords are essentially boring and not my thing at all. Or maybe I'm just no good at them. Then in an email I was alerted to a website that provides mentally stimulating puzzles and logic tests. I did a free trial of some of the services. However, I found it a bit stressful, and didn't think I really wanted to join up and pay the monthly fee, so I didn't pursue it.

You know what makes you feel good and what doesn't. If drinking plenty of water, taking certain supplements, or eating multiple small meals a day makes you feel better, then you already know more than the experts. Similarly, you probably know which of your "bad" habits make you feel ill, like eating too much sugar or spending too much time at your desk. If you are not sure what makes you feel better or worse, keep a diary for seven to twenty-one days. Log your daily food intake, exercise, level of stress, amount of sleep, and anything else that might affect your level of health. Notice what happens when you add or vary any of your habits.
